Equanimous Equation

Hey folks, I’ve just uploaded a demo of one of my most recent Sonic Pi compositions titled Equanimous Equation on YouTube. The track uses my usual set up these days: VS Code running a Sonic Pi server that sends MIDI data to Ableton that has a bunch of Surge XT synths.

I tried something a bit new with this video. I wanted to upload a version that could simply be listened to by folks interested in hearing the music, but I also wanted to use the video as a way to teach people about how I work. So this new approach has the music playing continuously in the background, and me using “comments” in the code to explain different details. Let me know what you think about this style.

The track itself is based in my eclectic “polyspiritual” practice. Not too long after I came out of a ten-day silent Vipassana meditation retreat, I began to read up more on the “philosophy” of Sun Ra (my musical and spiritual predecessor of mine). Hence the balance of “equanimity” (coming from a buddhist tradition) and “equation” (Sun Ra didn’t call his ideas a “philosophy,” “religion,” or “worldview,” but equations.

This has been such a fun track to make. Take a watch and let me know if you have any questions about the composition!

I actually met Sun Ra. Went backstage after his set at First Avenue years ago. He was radiant and transcendent, and the band was slammin!

I’m so jealous! At least now I can say I’m 1 (virtual) degree of separation from the legend hahah. I had the chance to see the Arkestra (as lead by Marshall Allen) a few years ago but couldn’t afford it at the time. I still regret not going. But it’ll happen one day!
